Körber commits to “net-zero” CO₂e emissions by 2040

We are proud to declare a significant milestone in our sustainability mission. We are now setting our sights on a future where the Körber Group's activities leave net-zero footprint.

In a dedicated effort to pave the way for a more sustainable world, we have set forth an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero CO₂e emissions across our entire value chain by 2040. We have worked intensively together with all Business Areas to ensure that our net-zero target is in line with the latest climate science and are delighted that it has been approved as such by the renowned Science Based Targets initiative. This long-term pledge signifies our unwavering promise to a better life for current and future generations.

Our road to “net-zero”

To fulfill this pledge, we initiated our sustainability journey in 2022 first by striving to become CO₂e-neutral by 2025 for our internal production (scope 1 and scope 2). We have thus committed ourselves to offsetting all emissions that we cannot avoid or reduce through our own efforts with high-quality sustainable projects.

Now, we are embarking on an even more ambitious goal - achieving net-zero emissions across our entire value chain. This involves tackling scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions without compensation, demonstrating our holistic and ambitious approach to sustainability. On the way to achieving these goals, we are fully aligned with the Corporate Net-Zero Standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Near-term targets: Reducing emissions by 2027

In the short term, we have established clear and measurable objectives. By 2027, we at Körber commit to a 29.4% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to our 2021 baseline. Additionally, we are equally committed to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 17.5% within the same timeframe.

Long-term targets set for 2030 and 2040

Our commitment to sustainability extends well into the future. By 2030, we aspire to cut absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to 2021. By 2040, we are determined to achieve a 90% reduction in absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from our 2021 baseline.

As of September 2023, these near- and long-term targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The SBTi is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science.

lOur net-zero targets are not just numbers – they are a gamechanger! Our driving force is to make our products, solutions, and services more sustainable.r

Erich Hoch, CTO/COO of the Körber Group

These targets go beyond numbers; they embody our unwavering dedication to the environment and a sustainable future. Achieving these reductions necessitates a transformation in our operations, innovations, and collaborations, as we strictly refrain from relying on offsetting measures.

“Our net-zero targets are not just numbers – they are a gamechanger! Our driving force is to make our products, solutions, and services more sustainable,” Erich Hoch, CTO/COO of the Körber Group emphasizes. “A heartfelt thank you extends to our teams worldwide, our customers, suppliers, and partners, without whom we couldn't embark on this next phase”.

Understanding "net-zero" and its significance

"Net-zero" signifies achieving a balance between the greenhouse gas emissions produced and those removed from the atmosphere. The focus here is on swift and deep emission reduction, while the remaining emissions that cannot be eliminated are neutralized through permanent carbon capture and storage. This means that, as a Group, we are not adding more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than we are mitigating. Achieving net-zero emissions spurs investment in clean energy, transportation, and sustainable business practices as well as innovation for outstanding sustainable products, solutions and services. More information can be found here.

Our main levers for CO₂e reduction lie in implementing ecodesign principles as well as collaboration with suppliers, customers and other business partners across the value chain. Our actions will result in a significant reduction in our carbon footprint, actively contributing to global efforts to combat climate change. They will also enhance our reputation as a leader in sustainable business practices. We invite you to join us in working towards these targets, reducing our collective carbon footprint, and fostering a better life for both current and future generations.

About SBTi

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.
